This pulls light greys towards white. It does not remove a busy background, so stand in front of a plain wall.

Check the official rules: GOV.UK passport photo rules

For the UK online application, GOV.UK asks for an uncropped photo of your head, shoulders and upper body and crops it for you. Use the print sheet for photos you post or print. Read the GOV.UK rules before you upload a cropped digital copy.

Printed photos must not be cut down from a larger picture, so print the sheet at full size (100 percent, no fit to page).

We size and crop your photo to the official measurements. The passport office decides if it is accepted, so check it against their rules.

Photo: 827 x 1063 px JPG. At least 600 x 750 px and between 50KB and 10MB. Sheet: 6x4 in, 1800 x 1200 px at 300 dpi, 8 photos.

Your 6x4 inch print sheet, with cut lines. Print at full size with no fit to page.

Questions

Can I resize a photo I already have?

Yes. Choose the picture, then move and zoom it inside the frame. We crop to the official shape and save it at the right size.

Will resizing make it blurry?

It stays sharp if the original is large enough. A recent phone photo taken close to a window is usually plenty.

What pixel size do you save?

UK and Australian photos at 827 x 1063 pixels, US passport photos at 1200 x 1200, Canadian photos at 1181 x 1654 and visa photos at 600 x 600. The UK online minimum is 600 x 750.

Does it keep my head the right size?

The guide lines show the head height the official page asks for, so you can see it as you zoom.
